Boston Bookclub

Because we like to write a lot of emails, because we have trouble reaching a consensus, because we're busy people, and, most importantly, because we all have fascinating insights into literature... we are making this space the space where we do all things 'book club.'

Hey everyone, the 26th definitely works for me.

Unfortunately I won't be able to come tonight for Indian Food. I do want to see all you gals, but alas, I'm moving some more stuff tonight.

Cape, here we come! I'm up for the cape whenever. I do have a tentative week planned in September for my cousin's house in Wellfleet again but I am definitely up for a mini weekend getaway anytime!

I do want to see aobut getting together with you guys on Saturday night for the Bon Jovi tribute. I am moving all my furniture that day, but will try to touch base and see if we can meet up somewhere....I'll probably try to head to your place Kelly around 8pm? would that be cool???

The 26th stays on my calendar then...sounds like that weekend may not be the best for the cape, we can try another time. Any of those seaside restaurants work for me, although we may want someplace where we haven't been before??

I will inquire about the Cape house for some alternative weekends and we can head there for some R&R and a sun tan!
I've got April 26 on my calendar, too! Waterfront restaurants I'm aware of: Joe's American, Tia's, Barking Crab, Anthony's Pier 4, Tavern on the Water...anyone else?

And put tomorrow on your calendar - 6:30, India Quality, Kenmore Square - I be cravin' some spicy food and it'd be good to catch up with y'all - especially the greek crew (I can travel vicariously at least).

This weekend, Hairbangers Ball at Harper's Ferry Saturday night, featuring Bon Jovi Tribute Band, Bounce! I'm guessing the show goes on at about 10, so how about a pre-Jovi Karaoke warm up? Maybe 6 or 7 oclock? With pizza and beer and Aqua Net?

I'd love to go to the Cape! For bookclub or otherwise... either 4/24-25 or 5/1-2 work for me. Earthfest is during the day on 4/24, so we could do that and then scoop up Abby on Chas. Street and head on down. Count me in!

Whew - I think that's it! If you're down for dinner tomorrow night, let me know!

The 26th will work for me- I've got it on my calender. I think a Cape weekend is a GREAT idea!! I could do it the weekend before, but anytime after that works for me as well- it was just April that got so crazy.
I can do any of those dates except the 19th (but even that might be possible).

Waterfront is good, but the cape sounds like fun!!
What is the name of the blogger of our tag-along friend from Seattle??
The 12th is also out for me with Easter..the 19th or the 26th should work. I will TENTATIVELY put the 26th on my calendar since that seemed to be where people were leaning.

Wanted to toss it out there now, since I know at some time in the past we had talked about a book club retreat/weekend away. My aunts have a house on the Cape (about 20 min. over the bridge), that might make for a fun meeting place for this book, since it does have some sort of ocean setting. If people are interested in a weekend thing (or more specifically a Sat. night thing so Abby can make it after work), let me know and I can check on availablity of the place. If it doesn't work out for this book, we should definitely head down some other time...it is a ton of fun there and they have a pool!

Beyond that, anything on the waterfront is fine by me!

Later,
Erin
Unfortunately, the 12th my mom is going to be visiting, the 19th I am going to be volunteering at the marathon, and if it is anything like last year, i will not be able to do anything afterwards, so I'm learning towards the 26th in terms of a Monday.
What about Tia's as the restaurant? I know its' on the water, and have had their food before, and it's pretty good. I"m not sure if it's strictly a bar though.
The 19th works best for me, but I could also do the 12th. Just let me know! And it's my turn to pick the list, right?

I thought the short article was good, though the picture should have included everyone! ;)

Second Bite: Appetite for Literature

A club dines out one book at a time.

For eight local women in their 20s and 30s, book club meetings are a great opportunity to try the city's restaurants. About every six weeks, the group selects an eatery that relates to the book the women are reading. Brookline's deli Zaftigs, the discussion spot for Portnoy's Complaint, ranks as one favorite, and Brighton's Jasmine Bistro, with a French-Hungarian menu, was the perfect place to eat chicken paprikash and discuss Prague, says member Erin McKenna, 28. But not every choice has been a success, she adds: Although Central Square's Enormous Room got a universal thumbs up, E. E. Cummings's book by the same name bombed.

I can meet you earlier- I wanted to go early and see if Banana Republic has a shirt that I want anyway. I work until 5:30 and then I need to change, so I could be there by around 6:15, 6:30. Which I guess doesn't really help you that much........
7pm is ok for me too. does anyone want to meet before hand? I have to work until 5:30pm, and then just hang out until then....

7 pm is fine by me! see you there!
Did we decide on a time for naked fish tonight?

Tuesday, March 09, 2004

Hello Everyone-
Are we still on for the 15th for book club! Naked Fish...works for me, and is probably the only date we will all be around for another month!

Wednesday, March 03, 2004

Okay I'm back in the fray. The 15th works for me - Naked fish is fine. I'll see everyone at Soho tonight at 8 - lookin' sharp!

The JP place sounds good, but it has no bar.
No bar = no mojitos, definitely the one thing I was looking forward to most in cuban dining.
I'm just sayin'...
Actually, I can do this week, just not tonight. Kelly, when do you leave for London? I would think it would be important to try and have you there, since you and Jen are the ones that talked to the woman. Very inconsiderate of them not to adjust their publishing schedule to suit our needs.
Arghh!! OK...I just spoke to the Boston Globe contact and received a completely different story in regards to timing. The latest they could do it is this Thursday night March 4 (because they go to print on Friday the 5th). Do they understand that we are busy people with work and social lives? He is looking to shoot us doing our normal book club routine...talking about a book at a restaurant. How is this week looking for people? Could we meet somewhere for drinks and fake a discussion? I told him I would get back to him soon.
the 15th is fine with me, and either place seems fine. I've always wanted to go to Naked Fish however, so I'm leaning towards that.
I think that calling the restaurant is a great idea, though I don't know about comps. They may just want to know that there is going to be "media" there to take our picture. Are they going to be interviewing us too, or just taking the picture for the article?
I think the point is that the Globe photog wanted to shoot us at an actual bookclub meeting. Erin - do you have the Globe guy's phone # to make sure that they want to photo us in the restaurant doing our book club thing?

Has it occurred that giving the restaurant the free publicity could garner us some meal comps? Perhaps we should call Chez Henri and Naked Fish and ask - can't hurt, particularly on a monday when things are slow. We could work this...

As I understand it, Kathy gets back on the 14th but is not likely able to meet that day. Thus, I think Monday the 15 is the best bet.

Chez Henri is expensive - entrees all well into the $20 range - but we could get a deal and it would be nice to dress it up for the Globe. The bar menu is cheaper, but, well, must be eaten at the small bar, I imagine. Not the normal roundtable.

Naked Fish is also cuban - but, due to sheila's aversion to fruit de la mer, it's worth checking that there is something suitable on the menu... looks like a lot of good paella, arroz con pollo,l etc. options...there are locations at Fanueil Hall and Waltham...
both restaurants are open mondays!
The 15th is fine with me! I am all about any kind of Cuban food- I like the idea of Chez Henri b/c I keep hearing about how great it is, but I also like the idea of going somewhere called the Naked Fish. :)
Yes...the Boston Globe would like to photograph us. Got a call on Friday from someone there inquiring when our next meeting was. I told him I would get back to him early this week with a date etc. I think he needs it done by the 19th or 20th...so, the dates mentioned below should work. I have finished the book and anyone is welcome to my copy! For me it was an easy read (I think I read it in one day)..so if you haven't started, you probably will be able to finish by Monday without too much trouble. I guess my vote is for Monday the 15th, just because we tend to be able to meet on Mondays. Although Tuesday the 16th would work too. St. Patty's day is kind of out for me. Any thoughts on where to go. I did some looking and found a cuban place in JP. But it might be kind of small and not the environment we are looking for. Another thought is Naked Fish (known for their cuban cocktails). I have never had an entree there, but there are yummy apps (including fried plantains). What do you all think?
I think that we narrowed it down to the 14th and 15th? Am I correct? I can't remember the exat dates, but any one of them is fine with me. Do we know where we are going to meet? Has anyone started or finished the book yet?
