Boston Bookclub

Because we like to write a lot of emails, because we have trouble reaching a consensus, because we're busy people, and, most importantly, because we all have fascinating insights into literature... we are making this space the space where we do all things 'book club.'

Hi I am sorry to reply so late. Bruce's host-grandmother died over the weekend and visitng hours are this evening. I expected to be able to join book club, while Bruce went to dinner with the family - but I think he wants me to go with him. Sorry for the short notice. -Wendy
I'll see you lovely ladies tonight. It's my turn to make the list?

Hi all, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it tomorrow night. A friend is moving back to Sweden on Wednesday and we're saying goodbye to her tomorrow night...Sorry, have fun though!
Reservation is made in my name for 7pm for McCormick & Schmick's Seafood in the theater district. It is located at the Park Plaza, 34 Columbus Avenue Boston, MA 02116. Parking is available around the commons and park, meters should open up at 7pm, if you want to time it accordingly.

Kathy, think you are up next on the list.
Which one are you making reservations for - theater district or Faneuil Hall?
7 works best for me.  Erin, thanks for making the reservations.  See you guys there!

Hi All, The 29th at 7:00 or 7:30 works for me. Cat's article was hard to read... I can't believe these things continue to happen.

It continues...

Disembowelled, then torn apart: The price of daring to teach girls

By Kim Sengupta in Ghazni, Afghanistan
Wednesday, 29 November 2006

The gunmen came at night to drag Mohammed Halim away from his home, in front of his crying children and his wife begging for mercy.

The 46-year-old schoolteacher tried to reassure his family that he would return safely. But his life was over, he was part-disembowelled and then torn apart with his arms and legs tied to motorbikes, the remains put on display as a warning to others against defying Taliban orders to stop educating girls.

Mr Halim was one of four teachers killed in rapid succession by the Islamists at Ghazni, a strategic point on the routes from Kabul to the south and east which has become the scene of fierce clashes between the Taliban and US and Afghan forces.

The day we arrived, an Afghan policemen and eight insurgents died during an ambush in an outlying village. Rockets were found, primed to be fired into Ghazni City during a visit by the American ambassador a few days previously.

But, as in the rest of Afghanistan, it is the civilians who are bearing the brunt of this conflict. At the village of Qara Bagh, the family of Mr Halim are distraught and terrified. His cousin, Ahmed Gul, shook his head: "They killed him like an animal. No, no. We do not kill animals like that, it would be haram. They took away a father and a husband, they had no pity. We are all very worried. Please go now, you see those men standing over there? They are watching. It is dangerous for you, and for us."

Fatima Mushtaq, the director of education at Ghazni, has had repeated death threats, the notorious "night letters". Her gender, as well as her refusal to send girls home from school, has made her a particular source of hatred for Islamist zealots.

"I think they killed him that way to frighten us, otherwise why make a man suffer so much? Mohammed Halim and his family were good friends of ours and we are very, very upset by what has happened. He came to me when the threats first began and asked what he should do. I told him to move somewhere safe. I think he was trying to arrange that when they came and took him," she said.

The threats against Ms Mushtaq also extend to her husband, Sayyid Abdul, and their eight children. "When the first letters arrived, I tried to hide them from my husband," she said. "But then he found the next few. He said we must stand together. We talked, and we decided that we must tell the children. So that they can be prepared, but it is not a good way for them to grow up."

Ms Mushtaq is familiar with the ways of the Taliban. During their rule she and her sister ran secret schools for girls at their home. The Taliban beat them for teaching the girls algebra.

Sounds like the 29th it is!

Thursday, April 10, 2008

22 or 29th are okay with me.
29th would be good to get back to last Tuesday of month and then Erin could join in, as it was her selection, right?

Any place mentioned would be fine, though I agree that Orleans is pretty loud. I like summer shack personally, although we've been there at least twice already.

Looks like they have steak, meatloaf, and chicken options but not a ton of them. Don't mind me while I have an entire conversation with myself on the blog!
Sorry, I meant to write that the "sample" menu looks great.
The McCormick & Schmicks menu looks great to me but I know not everyone likes seafood. Do they have good non-seafood options?
Just a word...while I love Orleans, it does get strangely loud in there. Might not be a good venue for discussion.

29th sounds good to me since I haven't made much of a dent.  I've never been to the Orleans restaurant - here is the link to their dinner menu if people want to check it out (orleansrestaurant.com/dinner.htm).  If we are just looking for sea food we can also consider McCormick & Schmicks which I think is the best bang for the buck in mid-price-range-sea-foo-chains.  There is a M&S near the Arlington T stop downtown.  Anyway, count me in for the 29th.
I'm good with any of the days. Not a big fan of either Barking Crab or Summer Shack, but woul dbe up to trying that Orleans place, never heard of it before...but will go wherever the general consensus wants to go...
I vote for April 29th - that gets us back to the last Tuesday of the month! Doesn't matter to me where we go....
I like the seafood ideas as well. As for days, if we can hold off until the end of April that would work best for me.

I'm open for any of those days! I would also vote for the Barking Crab or Summer Shack.
Howdy,

In standard fashion, I'm not yet sure if I'll be local for this one, but I did want to suggest the Summer Shack - I'm pretty sure we did this for a bookclub in the past, but it feels more 'cape-ish' than Orleans (name or not) or Legals.

Of course, nothing says Cape like the Cape itself... bookclub field trip?
HI Everyone, Any of those days work for me..........
I say that we do something seafood based like Erin suggested, so the barking crab or legal sea food or something like that work ......
Time to get the next book club meeting on the calendar. If we stick to the Tuesday night, we would be looking at April 15th, April 22 or April 28. My vote would be the 15th or 28th since I will be travelling the week of April 22nd. But, democracy should prevail and under the new rules of book club, it goes on no matter who can make it! So let popular vote begin!

(Based on previous posts, later looked better and there seemed to be some interest in the 22nd)

As for where to have it...I think seafood or true cape tie in a few of my suggestions would be:
1. Orleans in Davis (yes it is named Orleans after the town on the cape)
2. Eastern Standard in Kenmore
3. Barking Crab
4. Jimmy's Harborside
5. One of the Legal Seafood outlets
