Boston Bookclub

Because we like to write a lot of emails, because we have trouble reaching a consensus, because we're busy people, and, most importantly, because we all have fascinating insights into literature... we are making this space the space where we do all things 'book club.'

The new book is:
The Thing About Life is That One Day You’ll Be Dead
by David Shields
256 pages

"After you turn 7, your risk of dying doubles every eight years." By your 80s, you "no longer even have a distinctive odor ... You're vanishing." "The brain of a 90-year-old is the same size as that of a 3-year-old." And it goes on and on. David Shields's litany of decay and decrepitude might have overwhelmed the age-sensitive reader, but The Thing About Life Is That One Day You'll Be Dead manages to transcend the maudlin by melding personal history with frank biological data about every stage of life, creating an "autobiography about my body" that seeks meaning in death, but moreover, life. Shields filters his frank--and usually foreboding--data through his own experience as a 51-year-old father with burgeoning back pain, contrasting his own gloomy tendencies with the defiant perspective of his own 97-year-old father, a man who has waged a lifelong, urgent battle against the infirmities of time. (If believed, his love life at age 70 was truly marvelous.) Interwoven with observations of philosophers from Cicero and Sophocles to Lauren Bacall and Woody Allen ("I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve immortality through not dying."), Shields's book is a surprisingly moving and life-affirming embrace of the human condition, where inevitable failures and frailties become "thrilling" and "liberating," rather than dour portents of The End. The result is a naked, honest, and often funny book that forces one to look clearly at the realities of the body--especially the burden that biology imposes upon our inner life--in a fresh and disturbing way.

I am planning on calling tomorrow to see about tickets so hopefully this hasn't filled up yet. will keep you all posted.

Good night all!
Sara
See you at the bar!
Okay, I made reservation for 9 people (sari is the only one not coming) at Petit Robert in Kenmore for 7:30. I'm actually shocked that they are able to take us.

I will probably get there a little early, so I think I'll hang out in the barnes and noble. You can try and find me if you get there early too!

Ciao Bellas!
Hello-

My last BC class is tonight, I plan to let them out early... but it starts at 6:30pm so I'll still be runing a bit late... See you tonight!
I'm in!

Do you think we need a reservation? I can call if you think we do if no one has already, but I'll see you all tomorrow at 7:30.
so are we meeting at the Kenmore location (thank you for considering us T-folk!) at 7:30? I'm in but may get there at 8pm...have a late conf call.
I am a definite. Should we say Kenmore since we have some T riders and Erin will be there anyway?
I am in...this book is a must discuss for me. I have a hair appointment at 6pm in Kenmore Sqare. If they take me on time, should be done at 7pm (only a cut). So I can be there 7pm or later in Kenmore...7:30pm or later in the burbs.
Count me in! I'm halfway through the book, but plan to have it finished by tomorrow. It's an all too prescient topic right now, I'm afraid ;)
I'm definitely in. I think I have the list?
If we are doing Petit robert, reservations are a must as is an accurate head count. Good news is that there isn't a Red Sox game though.

I can be there if that's where we choose.
And which location? Boston or the burbs?

hello ladies,
Wondering what time we're meeting on Tuesday?
Sara

I'm in for the 23rd and french bistro sounds like a great idea!
have a great week everyone!
-Sara
Great, see you next Tues! -Wendy
23rd def. looked like the date based on availability.

So I really want to try and make it (I need to discuss this book). Also really need a hair cut before vacation. I am trying to make the 23rd work by scheduling the haircut for bookclub night. Petit Robert (which I LOVE) would really make things fall into place since my salon is in Kenmore as is the restaurant. Or to blend the suburban boredome and French restaurant, there is a location in Needham (also quite good) and it would be on my way home.
A French restuarant??! = ) Perhaps Bistro Petit Robert?? = P
Looks like the 23rd was the majority. Thoughts on a place to meet?
When are we meeting? Tomorrow or next week?

Off topic, but Cameron Diaz as the MOM in the movie version of My Sister's Keeper????
I don't remember the mom character too well, but didn't she order cocktail dresses online and then never have a chance to wear them outside?

I just can't see Camie as a mom of teenagers, she's been playing "the ditzy single girl" for like ever. Maybe it would have helped if she had played a mom of toddlers before this big jump.

Things have changed, either date is fine with me.

Saturday, June 06, 2009

I'm in! For either - but the 23rd is the better 'either'! Revolutionary Road, right?!
Perhaps somewhere soul-less in Suburbia to suit the mood?

And, Wendy, I have my hands on Persuasion and would be willing to have a belated Bookclub discussion sometime soon, if you are still up for it!

Hello Ladies,
Either date works for me.
Best,
Sara
The 16th works better for me too vs. the 23rd
Either works for me, but I might be a little late on the 16th (carry on & talk amongst yourselves ;-)
16th is much better for me. 23rd is a maybe...(don't feel bad, it is because I am leaving for vacation on the 24th!)
yes, 23rd!
23rd!
Sorry to throw a wrench in the works, but now they want me in CT the week of the 16th.

I'll leave it up to the masses- what's better for everyone, the 16th or the 23rd?
