Boston Bookclub

Because we like to write a lot of emails, because we have trouble reaching a consensus, because we're busy people, and, most importantly, because we all have fascinating insights into literature... we are making this space the space where we do all things 'book club.'

Also, The Asgard only takes reservations for 8 or more. I know Kelly is on the fence so I told the woman it might be only 7 of us. She said that isn't a big deal. However, if anyone else is going to cancel, please let me know asap. We will probably lose our reservation.
Sorry for the delay... have been struggling with this one! I made reservations in my name at The Asgard Pub (350 Massachusetts Ave.) for 7pm.
It would be super cool if we could make a decision today, so I can plan tomorrow's transportation accordingly. My vote's for something that's either close to the T, or has decent parking. I THINK Publick House meets those requirements. If I'm wrong, then I vote for something else = )

Other options for Irish pub's are The Burren in Davis Square or the Thirsty Scholar near Davis. By the way, the Elephant Walk has great food, but it is on the expensive side.

oh - and i would add The Warren Tavern in Chastown. Definitely historic old english patriot vibe ;)
The Russell House Tavern is new in Harvard Square and is supposed to be 'modern English pubby'. Harvard Square isn't super-great for parking, though there are lots for Cat & bebe.
Honestly not sure if I'm going to make it - haven't been able to get my hands on the book yet and have been flat out with the traveling and working these past weeks with a big call on Wed to prepare for and then leave for my bros wedding on Thurs. Oy. Will do my best though!
We did do the Squealing Pig for a very long ago bookclub (possibly pre-Kathy). Not sure about parking over there either... it's nearish to Northeastern and down a bit from the MFA, no?
I know we've all been to the Green Briar or Devlin's too but those could work with the theme of Irish bar...and parking is usually ok over there....
I mentioned The Elephant Walk recently and some folks were interested in going there for book club someday in the future. Its french & cambodian and excellent which doesn't have much to with the book, but (and I"m stretching here) Fireworks originally came from China and were being "blended"with English style for those displays (?) so a similar Euro-Asian synergy????

Anyway, its delicous and the locaiton in fenway (900 beacon st) should have street parking and they have valet parking for $9 and is near the greenline.
I've heard the Publick House is good too, and would be up for trying that.
If people liked the Brookline location, there is an Irish pub right down the street from The Fireplace. I think it's called the Publick House now? It should fit us all and isn't that loud during the week. T-accessible and parking isn't too bad. Aaron, do you know anything about The Squealing Pig? It's over by Northeastern- www.squealingpigboston.com. I don't know anything about it, but there was a lot of talk in the book about butchering the pig.
What about Solas Irish Pub in Back Bay? Parking isn't awesome but we've managed in Back Bay before....
That we haven't been to and that can accommodate a big group.... and that doesn't get too loud. ?
We are on for 7:00 but I'm still not sure where we should go. I don't really want to go somewhere we have already been. And parking and public transportation are an issue. Does anyone know a good Irish pub with ample parking and T accessible?

For starters, I'm impressed that I've actually read the book...any book lately. (Patting myself on the back now) :)

If we can stick to easy parking, and not much schlepping for those that come a distance, that would be great.

Are we still on for 7?

I'd prefer to try someplace new since we've tried the Fireplace before for book club but I'll go with the consensus. Lord Hobo is a great place, but I do have to agree about the parking and no real T access.
It's too bad that the Todd English's Bonfire is in Logan Airport, might be a little strange to hit up the airport for dinner ! :)
I'd prefer fireplace in brookline to lord hobo due to parking issues (I'll likely be bringing adam and like Sara don't want to be wandering around in the cold).

though we did go there on a previous bookclub, I think it was when we learned Wendy was pregnant, I am remembering correctly?
ooh, Lord Hobo's is good. It used to be the B-side, for those that remember it. Food is good, it's HUGE.
Here are a few results from a google search of Boston British Restaurants:

Tory Row in Cambridge - Good food and big tables. Not sure how loud it gets later.
The Bristol Lounge - Never heard of it.
Green Dragon Tavern - Never been.
Emmets - Never heard of it.
The Haven in JP - Scottish not English but I've been wanting to try it.
Cornwall's - maybe we've met there already too?
British Beer Company in Framingham. Might be better for Erin but I don't think she'll be able make this meeting.
Lord Hobo in Cambridge - Not sure if this is actually British but it sounds like it!
Am I crazy (well, yes, we all know the answer to that one!) or did we already have bookclub at Fireplace? Doesn't mean we can't do it again but....

Hello - I like the Fireplace idea both b/c of the menu and it's close to the T. If next Tuesday is anything like today I don't want to be meandering the streets freezing to death! Hope everyone had a great long weekend!

what time?

Sara

LOL: "I'm not opposed to it, I always just feel smelly when I leave" ... hahhahahaha!
I've always wanted to try the Fireplace in Brookline
Fireplace in Brookline? Fire and Ice wouldn't be my preference, although I am not opposed to it. I just always feel greasy and smell when I leave there.
Fire and Ice? Firefly's?
Or a place with "Fire" in the name?
Looks like Tues. 3/1 is the best date for our next meeting. Does anyone have restaurant suggestions? British or polish restaurants? Other ideas?

on a side note, I read Sag Harbor from Aaron's list as well. I thought it was pretty good - funny with lots of pop culture references.
